Bring an existing Whistling Birds build up to the current v2.5 hardware specification without replacing the entire system.
The biggest upgrade is the current-spec speaker, which is significantly louder and has a wider usable range than the original. The kit also adds quick-disconnect wiring for easier servicing and the additional power-detection components introduced with v2.5.
Included in the hardware kit
- Upgraded speaker with louder output and a wider usable range
- JST quick-disconnect components for the LED assembly and reed switch, making the gearbox easier to remove and reinstall
- Two additional 100kΩ resistors for USB power detection, enabling the charging animation when connected to a wall charger or power bank
Basic soldering is required. This is a do-it-yourself upgrade for every kit tier, Assembled Kits included; the v2.5 gearbox is paired with the v2.5 LED housings, so there is no gearbox exchange or send-in service for it.
Optional v2.5 printed parts set · +$5
If your current mechanism is working well, you do not need to replace it.
The optional printed set is for builders who want the current mechanical design or are experiencing binding, alignment, or serviceability issues.
It includes the complete v2.5 printed mechanism since old and new revisions can not be mixed:
- Updated mounting brackets
- Improved flex-tab gearbox release
- Revised timing gear
- French-cleat LED row connections
- Complete gearbox and covers
- All LED housings and covers
- Standard and large-flange rear brackets
- Fiber-optic heat-forming jigs
- Dart-tip glue jig
The updated mounting brackets provide more consistent positioning, while the French-cleat connections help keep the LED rows securely seated during movement.

If you add the printed parts
The v2.5 printed set uses revised LED housings, so the LED strip and fiber optics must be transferred from the original housings.
Your existing LEDs can be reused, but the strip, wiring, and solder joints are delicate and can be damaged during removal.
The existing fiber optics may also be reused, but depending on how your original build was assembled, they may be difficult to remove cleanly or may need to be replaced and refitted.
LED options
Reuse your existing LEDs · included
Carefully remove the LED sections from the original housings and reinstall them in the new v2.5 housings.
Raw replacement LED strip · +$10
A fresh LED strip for you to cut, solder, and install yourself.
Presoldered LED housings · +$60
A new LED strip is cut, soldered, tested, and installed into the v2.5 housings before shipment. Ready for your fiber optics and wiring connection.
Beskar tips with prepared fiber optics · +$50
Add a complete set of resin Beskar dart tips finished in Alumaluster.
The fiber optics are already sharpened and glued into the tips, giving you a fresh set ready to fit into the LED housings.
This is a good option if your existing fibers are damaged, difficult to remove, or you would rather replace them during the mechanical upgrade.
